Like wearing baby pink to a heavy metal concert, it takes a lot to rock a name like Waco. We learned last summer how to “Keep Austin Weird”, and now we’re going to get some lessons in how to “Keep Waco Wacko.” How do you keep a city wacko? We have a lot to learn, but welcome any opportunities to contribute to the awesomeness and weirdness of a city.

Romance & Cowboys in Waco

There’s a venue in Waco called Wild West, where men and women of all ages come and do the Texas Two Step. It’s the sort of place where a boy asks a girl to dance, takes her by the hand and leads her to the dance floor. Cowboy boots gracefully shimmy across the floor, while the DJ spins slow country songs.

Lord knows how many romances have blossomed on those dusty floorboards. One man who is no stranger to love is The Cassanova Cowboy. We met him at Wild West and the next day he was willing to guide us through the wooing process of his poetry.

Wow, Waco. Where do I begin?

We are just four bright-eyed travelers, beginning a journey that will weave us through the web of amazing individuals all across the country. And Waco, you were the warm welcome, the poignant introduction and the first course for all we are to experience this summer.

The man in the photo is Jimmy Dorrell, one of the most amazing community leaders I’ve ever met. I had heard of him before we came into town and learned about his work with Mission Waco. About 30 years ago, Jimmy and his family were working with the poor and ill-stricken in Calcutta, India and realized they wanted to be doing the same work in their own country. They sold their belongings, moved into the rough side of town and began building their family and community in and around the darkest places of Waco. Today Jimmy is known by just about everybody in the area for his work with the homeless and poor. Natalie and I were so humbled and touched by the morning we got to spend with Jimmy and his friends on the streets, hanging out under the I-35 bridge.

So sad to leave such an awesome community!

Natalie and I are blogging from atop the Waco Suspension Bridge this lovely Wacoan evening. Word on the street is that young adults come to the bridge at sunset to toss tortillas into the water. If the tortilla lands onto one of the bridge pillars, supposedly they are lucky in love. Too bad we forgot to bring our tortillas tonight!

Are we nervous/excited/eager for the first tour stop tomorrow? All of the above. If you’re coming out tomorrow to record you Aha Moment, shout out to us @myahamoment.

See you tomorrow!
