My wife and I had adopted a girl from Cambodia in 2000 and after seeing the poverty in Cambodia, my wife Carmen wanted to do something to help the country. She thought about it for many years and finally decided to fund a scholarship for a Cambodian girl who had to be underpriviledged or an orphan. She asked me to help her navigate the bureaucracy and laws associated with creating a scholarship and making the donations tax deductible. After researching non-profit organization laws and help from existing NGOs, she found a girl who was rescued from the sex trade and wanted to be a nurse. A Califorinian non-profit is transferring the money for us and River Kids (NGO) in Cambodia is watching the girl for us and making sure her college money is not lost in to corruption in Cambodia. Several friends are helping to fund the scholarship. My aha moment is seeing how my wife's tenacity showed me how easy it is to help someone. We may not be able to save the world, but we can save it one person at a time. Cambodia has a severe nurse shortage. This girl will provide much needed medical care to a suffering country and her children will never have to endure her hardships. We can make a difference.
