I worked for years as a qualitative researcher. One day I got a calling to become a drug and alcohol counselor and although I wasn't an addict and couldn't understand addiction on that level, I decided to follow my calling. I started with a small group of addicts and one of them asked me how I could possibly relate. I replied "It's not about being an addict, recovery is about learning how to live life." That was ten years ago and I still work as a counselor today.
